Citrulline malate: the pre-workout staple, explained plainly
It is in almost every pre-workout tub on the shelf, and almost nobody selling it can tell you what it does — because in the UK, legally, nobody may.

What it is
L-citrulline is a non-essential amino acid: your body makes it, and it also occurs in food, most famously in watermelon. Malic acid is an organic acid found in apples and used widely in food production. Bound together, they form citrulline malate — a stable, water-soluble powder that is easy to formulate with.

What a UK label may say
Nothing about what it does. No authorised health claim exists for citrulline or citrulline malate on the GB register, so sellers may describe it factually — an amino acid derivative widely used in sports nutrition — and state the amount.
This is one of the clearest examples of the gap between marketing culture and UK law. Plenty of overseas sites make performance claims. In Great Britain, those claims are not permitted, and their presence on a UK-facing site is a red flag rather than a selling point.

L-citrulline is the amino acid on its own. Citrulline malate combines it with malic acid, usually in a stated ratio such as 2:1, which means a given weight contains less pure citrulline than the same weight of L-citrulline.
How is it different from L-arginine?+
Citrulline is a precursor the body converts towards arginine. Both are sold as supplements; citrulline is the more common choice in modern pre-workout formulas.

Dedicated pre-workout powders often use several grams per serving. Multi-ingredient capsule formulas use far less — a few hundred milligrams — because capsules cannot physically carry gram-scale doses without a large serving.
Is citrulline malate a stimulant?+
